Oriental Cuckoo (Cuculus saturatus): My Lifer

I am staying put in Labuan this weekend even though I surely miss the family so much. Cannot afford going back every weekends! I planned on going to the botanical garden even I was quite reluctant at first. Had the impression that there might be a lot of people there.

Went there around 9.00am and spent three hours enjoying the garden all to myself! Only one or two people there and not much bother to my hunting activities! After all, the area is quite huge. Most important thing is, there are a few species of birds there.

1. Oriental Cuckoo (Cuculus saturatus)

I knew I was in luck when I saw an Oriental Cuckoo perched on a dead branch in the middle of a grass field. I did not know what it was and got assistance from Ron Pudin to determine the ID. Afterward, of course!

2.Oriental Cuckoo (Cuculus saturatus)

This was the sweetest moment of the hunt. I managed to moved in close enough to the bird and successfully captured a much better shot.

3. Oriental Cuckoo (Cuculus saturatus)

This shot is not so great, but good enough for the profiling. This particular bird was not so shy and flew short distances between trees just to make me sweat in the hot morning sun.

4. Olive-backed Sunbird

I was right on the edge of the lake to get to this angle. It was a tough shot, considering I was having trouble to balance myself. Quite proud of the end result. Action shot of the day, I guess.

5. Olive-backed Sunbird

Another shot of the sunbird. I think I nailed the shot nicely.

All in all, I guessed going to the botanical garden was not a bad idea at all. My lifer; the Oriental Cuckoo really put a smile on my face...maybe enough to get me going through another lonely week ahead. Sigh...miss my family.
